Roundabouts

  • The roundabout island is the round area in the middle — the whole junction, road and island together, is the "cirkulationsplats".
  • Vehicles already in the roundabout have priority — you yield when entering.
  • Advantages of roundabouts:
    • Safe — low speeds make serious accidents rare.
    • Easy to understand — drivers rarely go the wrong way or fail to yield.
    • Smoother traffic flow — less queuing than at signal-controlled intersections.
  • Choose your lane based on where you're going: right lane for an early exit, left lane for going most of the way around.
  • Change lanes inside the roundabout with your indicator, but only if it can be done without obstructing or endangering other traffic.
  • It's a good idea to be in the right-hand lane before exiting — not a requirement, but it improves safety.
  • Signal right when leaving the roundabout; signalling is normally not required when entering it.
